In Search of Resonance

Summer break is here. I'm sorry I've not updated this blog sooner but I've been revising my novel and working at a summer internship that has turned into shift work recently.

As I revise, I hope to add resonance to my story, to make the characters more real, to make things more gritty. This has led me to thinking about epigraphs. I love these tools but I think more than one should never be used. I've found two that I think fit the theme of my novel but I'd like to know what you guys and girls think. Which one is best?

All I'm saying is simply this, that all life is interrelated, that somehow we're caught in an inescapable network of mutuality tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. For some strange reason, I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. You can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality.

--Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

D'you wear a black armband
When they shot the man
Who said "Peace could last forever"
And in my first memories
They shot Kennedy
I went numb when I learned to see
So I never fell for Vietnam
We got the wall of D.C. to remind us all
That you can't trust freedom
When it's not in your hands
When everbody's fightin'
For their promised land
