If you're interested in those times, you might enjoy Gary Corby's series of Athenian mysteries. They are light-hearted fictional murder mysteries, but he has done serious historical research and the plots are strung together on a framework of real people and events. More to the point, these are modern styled novels with close POV rather than histories, and so give a strong feeling for Athenian life and politics in the fledgling democracy.
